How to Plan a Secure and Reliable Office Network

Most office network problems aren’t caused by faulty equipment. They’re caused by decisions made in a hurry: too few cable points, a single switch nobody can replace, Wi-Fi added as an afterthought. A little planning up front saves a lot of disruption later.

Start with how people work

List the teams, the applications they rely on, and the devices that will connect — laptops, phones, printers, cameras, door controllers, meeting-room screens. Count them, then add room to grow. A network sized only for today is usually full within two years.

Get the cabling right first

Cabling is the hardest and most expensive part to change later. Install quality Cat6 or Cat6A to every desk, meeting room and wireless access point location, add spare points, and have every link tested and labelled.

Design for failure

  • Use redundant links and power for the equipment the business cannot be without.
  • Keep spares or support agreements for core switches and firewalls.
  • Back up device configurations so a replacement can be up in minutes.

Separate your traffic

Put staff, guests, servers and devices such as cameras and printers on separate network segments. If one is compromised or overloaded, the others keep working.

Plan Wi-Fi like a utility

Wi-Fi should be surveyed and designed, not simply installed. Placement, channel planning and capacity matter far more than the number on the box.

Build in security and monitoring

A properly configured firewall, secure remote access and monitoring that alerts you when something changes are not extras — they are part of a reliable network.
